Weathering the Storm

“If you want the rainbow, you have to deal with the rain.” ―  John Green,  The Fault in Our Stars I grew up in West Texas, and have lived in Wyoming, Oklahoma, Alaska, and Arizona, so I've seen lots of weird weather. Last week, though, I experienced a weather phenomenom I've never seen before. My family and I were driving through Canyonlands National Park. (I highly recommend it, by the way. It's beautiful!) It was warm, and the high altitude and dry air made the sunshine feel especially hot, so when a few clouds moved in, it was a relief. On the way out of the park, we hit a few sprinkles. But then, up ahead, there was something white across the road. It looked a little like a fog bank, but this wasn't the sort of country that gets much fog. A minute later, we drove into a torrential rainshower. It was like driving under a waterfall. One side was barely sprinkling, and a second later, it was pouring rain and soft hail was smashing into the windshield. ...

Words I Was Using Wrong

Under words that don’t mean what I originally thought they meant—DECIMATE: to kill one in every ten of (a group of soldiers or others) as a punishment for the whole group .  So if a rabbit decimates my lettuce patch, 9 of 10 lettuce plants is okay. Honestly, I’m okay with that.  BRAISE: fry (food) lightly and then stew it slowly in a closed container.   A great way to cook pork chops BTW.  BRAISE is not the same as BRAZE: form, fix, or join by soldering with an alloy of copper and zinc at high temperature. Nor does it mean to grill over an open flame.  PRODIGAL: spending money or resources freely and recklessly; wastefully extravagant . From context, I assumed prodigal meant someone who spurns or runs away from his home and family. Nope. Just a spendthrift. Have you discovered words you were using wrong?

Running of the Reindeer 2019

Those of you who have read Alaskan Hideaway might remember the "Running of the Reindeer" event in Fur Rondy. I thought I'd post a few photos from this year's event.  There was a crowd at the fences, and it is Fur Rondy, so I saw lots of big furry hats like the one above. The men's run was first. Some of them had very interesting costumes. I love the dragon, although it brought up the rear in more of an amble than a run, way behind the reindeer.  Then they gathered the reindeer up and took them back down the street so the women could run.  As you can see, the women had great costumes, too. I'm especially fond of the cookie monster.  All and all, lots of fun and cute reindeer. Fun times in Anchorage.

Bend; don't break.

Believe it or not, this spruce tree in my neighbor's yard was tall and straight until last spring, when a severe windstorm followed by a heavy spring snow bowed it into this shape. It could easily have snapped, but instead the tree bent. I imagine it will eventually begin to straighten and grown toward the sun. And thrive. I think we all face storms and heavy loads, and sometimes something has to give. But when we bend instead of break, we are able to weather the hardship. Maybe even thrive. May your loads be light and your heart happy this new year.
